The Forever War

A THOUSAND YEAR CONFLICT. ONE SOLDIER LIVES THROUGH IT ALL. CAN HE MAINTAIN HIS HUMANITY?The Forever War is a science fiction classic that chronicles the life of William Mandella. Due to the time distortion associated with deep space travel, he is present during both the first and the last battle of a thousand year old conflict with the alien Taurans. A masterpiece of not just science fiction, The Forever War illustrates the futility of all wars and their effect on the human soul. The Forever War won all major science fiction awards including the Hugo, Nebula and Locus. Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien, is currently adapting this classic for film. This is the author's preferred version and includes a foreword by John Scalzi, author of Old Man's War.REVIEWS"If there was a Fort Knox for science fiction, we'd have to lock Joe Haldeman up and throw away the key." - Steven King"The Forever War is brilliant-one of the most influential war novels of our time. That it happens to be set in the future only broadens and enhances its message." - Greg Bear"The Forever War is not just a great science fiction novel, it's a great Vietnam war novel-and a great war novel, without qualification-that is also science fiction. A classic to grace either genre." - Iain BanksJOE HALDEMAN'S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS2010 Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award for Lifetime Achievement 2009 Robert A. Final Call - A Mary O'Reilly Paranormal Mystery (Book 4)

Stanley peered up into the shadows above the stage. There was a colorful blaze of fabric amidst the burgundy curtains and canvas backdrops. He moved closer, trying to get a better view from a different angle.“Hey, what’s this play about anyway?” Stanley asked. “Is it a Western?”“No, it’s a drama,” Rosie replied.“How come you need a dummy hanging from a rope?”She looked over quickly. “No one gets hanged in the play.”“Sure looks like it. Up there.”Rosie looked up to where he directed and saw the caftan and silk pants ruffling in the slight breeze of the theater twenty feet over the stage. “Oh, sweet heavens! Stanley,” she screamed. “That’s Faye!”Faye McMullen was murdered in cold blood at Winneshiek Theater and Mary O’Reilly and Police Chief Bradley Alden have to discover who done it before the murderer gets the chance to get rid of the prime witness... Mary O’Reilly.

Restless Heart

Selena Crawford struggles to keep her Bed and Breakfast afloat while caring for her younger brother and sister since their parents were killed in a train crash. Her life is very full, but lonely.Derek Channing has always believed life was an adventure, but lately has been dissatisfied and looking for change. When his Corvette breaks down in Heritage, Colorado, he takes a room at Selena’s B&B, and ends up finding the biggest adventure of his life. Here’s a short excerpt:He wished he could see the house clearly, but the welcoming light from the porch and the storm kept it in the shadows. Snow that now felt like sleet blew into his nose causing it to burn while the wind stung his eyes, blinding him. The high wind had whipped the drifted snow into mini-fortresses, blocking his pathway. He spied a small open area and worked his way through it to the porch steps. To keep from falling, Derek started up the stairs, he skidded, lost his footing on the step and grabbed the railing. He stifled the curse that rose to his lips. Now if I can just get to the door. Carefully he inched his way to the porch, which protected the front door from the weather. The dim light coming from inside the house seemed like a beacon pointing to refuge and comfort. Derek removed his glove and knocked on the beveled glass door. He tried to remain calm, but it wasn’t working. It had been a long time since he had been this frustrated. When no one answered his knock, he spied a doorbell and pressed it. He waited for what seemed like an eternity, shivering in his still-wet clothes. He needed to get inside and dry off. Maybe he should have changed clothes at George’s garage, but he had been in a hurry to get to shelter, a warm bed, and some hot food. Finally, a shadowed figure approached. Slowly the front door opened, revealing a woman with long auburn hair spilling down her shoulders, her face pale in the soft light of a hurricane lamp. Because of George’s age-he looked like he might be in his seventies-Derek had been expecting a short, gray-haired lady to come shuffling to the door. Boy was he wrong.Although her floor-length green robe hid her shape, she was tall, delicate, and stunning. Her friendly smile caused something inside him to tremble.A soft, husky voice spoke. ”You must be Derek.”Her eyes roved over his damp clothes and dress boots, useless in this storm.“George Harmon called to say I’d be coming.”“Yes, he did.” She opened the door wider. “Please, come in. I’m Selena.” She reached to shake his hand.Heat met with cold. The warmth of personal contact had his hand lingering a moment too long. Speechless, he let go as if a small current of electricity passed between them. Startled by reactions flashing through him, he carefully colored his voice. “Thanks for taking me in so late.”In the hallway, the scent of flowers filled the air. Her eyes were green like a country meadow. His mouth dried.“Come in by the fire.” She walked across the living room, switching on additional lights.“Let me leave my boots here.” Derek reached down to pull off his boots with stiff fingers that would not cooperate. Finally, kicking his feet free, he dragged his shivering body over toward the flames. “Ahhh, heat,” he moaned.“Let me hang up your jacket.”Selena tried to help him get his jacket off since his hands were so stiff. All he could hear was the rasp of his zipper unlocking, then came the pop of snaps being pulled apart. The noise suggested an intimacy it was far too soon to consider………

Seven Up (Stephanie Plum, No. 7)

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum's got a lot on her mind. How does cigarette smuggler Eddie DeChooch, a fugitive so geriatric that even the hot-to-trot Grandma Mazur won't go out with him a third time, keep giving her the slip? How did a woman who died of a heart attack end up in DeChooch's garden shed with five bullet holes in her chest? Who stole a rump roast from Dougie and Mooner, the two lovable potheads who have decided to be crime fighters in Spandex bodysuits? Can Stephanie's perfect sister Valerie make it as a lesbian single mother without driving her family crazy? And--oh yeah--what should Stephanie do about that damn wedding dress on hold at Tina's Bridal Shoppe, waiting for her to decide whether vice cop Joe Morelli's really the one for her? I did look good in the gown. I looked like Scarlett O' Hara getting ready for a big wedding at Tara. I moved around a little to simulate dancing. "Jump up and down so we can see how it'll look when you do the bunny hop," Grandma said. "It's pretty but I don't want a gown," I said. "I can order one in her size at no obligation," Tina said. "No obligation," Grandma said. "You can't beat that." "As long as there's no obligation," my mother said. I needed chocolate. A lot of chocolate. "Oh gee," I said, "look at the time. I need to go." To complicate matters further, Stephanie's made a reluctant deal with the devil: if she can't bring in DeChooch by herself, her sexy but dangerous cohort Ranger is willing to help--for a price that a girl who's not-exactly-engaged is uncertain whether she should pay. But when Dougie and Mooner disappear, Grandma is kidnapped, and a crazy widow starts taking pot shots, no one who hides her .38 in a cookie jar is going to turn down a little friendly assistance. In Seven Up, Janet Evanovich serves up her usual bubbly fare: a totaled car, raucous viewings at Stiva's Funeral Parlor, buffoonish bad guys, and down-and-dirty mud wrestling, all stirred up with some snappy Jersey repartee and a few tart, new twists that will keep her fans impatient. Heaven can't wait for number eight. --Barrie Trinkle

Why write a thriller?D.A.: Because some of the authors I most admire write thrillers, and some of my all-time favorite books are thrillers. Amazon: Tell us about THE KILLING LEAGUE and how you came up with the idea.D.A.: I've always been fascinated with competition and how it relates to human behavior. I also wondered if serial killers were competitive, and the research I did proved that a lot of them were (and in some cases, still are.) So then I thought, what if an active serial killer wanted to prove he was the best? How would he do it? How would he find other active serial killers and get them to compete? Who would the target victims be? The result is my thriller, THE KILLING LEAGUE.Amazon: What other projects do you have coming up?D.A.: I'm working on the sequel to Death By Sarcasm. It's called Murder With Sarcastic Intent. And right after that, the sequel to Dead Wood. Amazon: Where can readers reach you?D.A.: First of all, my readers are the most supportive, fun, fantastic people I know. I love talking with them. And I do that regularly over at my website, daniamore.com Of course, I'm also on Facebook and Twitter.

Why Me?

In the blink of an eye, Mom ran up behind me and pushed me into the fence. Instinctively, I reached out my arms to stop my fall and ended up grabbing the live fence. My hands clamped around the thin wires, and my body collapsed to the ground as the electricity coursed through it. I opened my eyes and saw my mother standing over me with the strangest smile on her face. “Oh, my God, I’m going to die!” I thought in panic. Imagine never being able to close your eyes and remember the feel of your mother’s arms wrapped around you. Now imagine closing your eyes and remembering your mother’s tears splashing down on your face as she is on top of you, crying as she is trying to choke you to death. My mother left me these memories and many more during my traumatic childhood. After many years of struggling with trying to understand “Why Me?” I took back control of my life and started saying, “It was me, now what am I going to do?” The answer is my book, “Why Me?”. It is my childhood journey through the terrors of physical and mental abuse from first grade until the day I moved out. It is my way of letting the world know what was really going on behind closed doors.
