THE GRIMM FAIRY TALES COLLECTION [ILLUSTRATED]

*** THE GRIMM FAIRY TALES, Twenty Five Complete & Original Fairy Tales With Beautiful Classic Illustrations Plus BONUS AudiobookTHE GRIMM FAIRY TALES, Children's and Household Tales (German: Kinder- und Hausmärchen) is a collection of German origin fairy tales first published in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brothers Grimm. The collection is commonly known today as Grimms' Fairy Tales (German: Grimms Märchen). This Collection Includes:THE GOOSE-GIRLTHE LITTLE BROTHER AND SISTERHANSEL AND GRETHELOH, IF I COULD BUT SHIVER!DUMMLING AND THE THREE FEATHERSLITTLE SNOW WHITECATHERINE AND FREDERICKTHE VALIANT LITTLE TAILORLITTLE RED CAPTHE GOLDEN GOOSEBEARSKINCINDERELLAFAITHFUL JOHNTHE WATER OF LIFETHUMBLINGBRIAR ROSETHE SIX SWANSRAPUNZELMOTHER HOLLETHE FROG PRINCETHE TRAVELS OF TOM THUMBSNOW-WHITE AND ROSE-REDTHE THREE LITTLE MEN IN THE WOODRUMPELSTILTSKINLITTLE ONE-EYE, TWO-EYES AND THREE-EYESOn December 20, 1812, they published the first volume of the first edition, containing 86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1814. For the second edition, two volumes were issued in 1819 and a third in 1822, totaling 170 tales. The third edition appeared in 1837; fourth edition, 1840; fifth edition, 1843; sixth edition, 1850; seventh edition, 1857. Stories were added, and also subtracted, from one edition to the next, until the seventh held 211 tales. All editions were extensively illustrated, first by Philipp Grot Johann and, after his death in 1892, by Robert Leinweber. The first volumes were much criticized because, although they were called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions - such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references-such as Rapunzel's innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naïvely revealing her pregnancy and the prince's visits to her stepmother-but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. In 1825 the Brothers published their Kleine Ausgabe or "small edition," a selection of 50 tales designed for child readers. This children's version went through ten editions between 1825 and 1858.The influence of these books was widespread. W. H. Auden praised the collection, during World War II, as one of the founding works of Western culture. The tales themselves have been put to many uses. The Nazis praised them as folkish tales showing children with sound racial instincts seeking racially pure marriage partners, and so strongly that the Allied forces warned against them; for instance, Cinderella with the heroine as racially pure, the stepmother as an alien, and the prince with an unspoiled instinct being able to distinguish. Writers who have written about the Holocaust have combined the tales with their memoirs, as Jane Yolen in her Briar Rose.

The Execution of Mayor Yin, and Other Stories from the Great Proletarian

Praise for the first edition:"... in the great tradition of Orwell and Solzhenitsyn; its true subject is the survival—and sometimes the defeat—of the human spirit in its lonely quest for integrity." —Time"The almost childlike directness of Chen's tales... is captured in the very lightly revised translations of this new edition... Highly recommended." —ChoiceA classic of modern world literature, this collection of stories provides a vivid and poignant eyewitness view of everyday life in China during the Cultural Revolution. For this edition, Howard Goldblatt has thoroughly revised the text and updated it to Pinyin romanization. In a new introduction, Perry Link reflects on the book's significance in the post-Tiananmen era. Twenty-five years after its first publication, The Execution of Mayor Yin has lost none of its power to move the reader, and remains unmatched as a document of the period.

Romeo and Juliet (Illustrated with Free audiobook link)

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare about two young "star-cross'd lovers" whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular archetypal stories of young, teenage lovers.Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1582. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original.Shakespeare's use of dramatic structure, especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course of the play. The book includes illustrations by photographs from life of Maude Adams, other members of her company, by Byron and Sarony, and also Illustrations by Andriolli; an activea/navigable table of contents; and a Free audiobook link for download (which can be downloaded using a PC/Mac) at the end of the book.
